Viva Vigan: Celebrating 2 Decades of Its Cityhood and Its Annual Fiesta

The Vigan City Fiesta Celebration occurs every 25th of January. It is celebrated during the feast day of the conversion of St. Paul- the city’s patron saint. Before his conversion, St. Paul was known as Saul, who was a person that hated Christians and would persecute them, until one day he had an encounter with Jesus that made him blind and after he was healed, he repented all of his sins, converted into a Christian, baptized, and was renamed Paul.

The Vigan City Fiesta usually lasts for several days. It includes within the period of the celebration of the anniversary of the cityhood of Vigan, which is commemorated every January 27. Keep in mind that we are celebrating 2 decades of the cityhood of Vigan. Every year we celebrate these kinds of events to promote the products,  and beauty of Vigan but because of the pandemic that we are currently facing, we weren’t able to fully enjoy and experience the celebration this year.  Some barangays were in a lockdown which led them to only stay at their home and only go out if needed. We weren’t able to see the usual contests that should’ve been held like the street dance and showdown competition, and the like.

Even though we are restricted from doing any social gathering or event. The city thought of celebrating this year’s fiesta digitally. There was an online mass and a trivia night that was conducted. Even though that we may not have to experience going out and enjoying this year’s fiesta, and it is really a rough time for all of us, we can still enjoy and celebrate this year’s fiesta at the comfort of our own homes with our families and that what really matters.

This maybe is the first time that we have to celebrate at home and it is unusual for all of us but let’s just try to look at the good side of it. We are not participating in any social event which lessens the spread of the virus, we can ensure that we are safe, and we can still gather around at our own homes with our family and get to have a simple gathering without breaking any health protocols. Besides, the essence of this fiesta is not about having and partying outside but a chance for us to know that even in rough times, we are still together strong fighting and keep going and moving forward
